Bret Stephens would have been a college student in the early 90s. His "totalitarian left" classmates would have been protesting South African apartheid, homophobia, & lack of public funding to fight AIDS. And Bret is somehow saying THOSE PEOPLE were on the wrong side of history?
The only moderately redeeming point in that Stephens piece has to do with the deeply historical nature of one's conception of "the right." It's true that in 20 years most of us will look back and wonder "why did I so firmly believe X or Y back then?"
But the conclusion he draws from that is so incredibly dumb. Yes, many white people in the early 90s thought Clinton's Sister Souljah moment was great. Now, looking back, most white people have now reconsidered that moment and are appalled that Clinton did that. Not Bret.

The explicitly anti-racist politics of Sesame Street (and also the Electric Company) have a lot to do with why conservatives turned against PBS in the 1970s and 1980s.
Can't find the citation now, but I remember reading that in the 1st years of the show Sesame Street would test market all of their segments w/ kids from a predominantly African-American public housing unit in NYC. If something didn't resonate with that audience, they scrapped it.
Here's a thread from last year where I talk about how Sesame Street and the Electric Company in the 1970s taught me to imagine the American working class as always multiracial and multiethnic.

It’s always someone else’s fault; a staffer, a rogue campaign worker, a rogue MLA, an event he didn’t know about until after the fact, NDP operatives working to smear him ... but it is never, EVER, Jason Kenney’s fault. He is incapable of accepting responsibility. 2/ #ableg
This, almost more than anything else, is very troubling to me. Smart, strong leaders can admit when they’ve made a mistake. They can fulsomely apologize, & work to never repeat that mistake. Weak leaders & narcissists are incapable of doing so. 3/ #ableg

2/ ...only 1 real US Treasury security for every 3 owners whose brokerage accts show they own it (per IMF estimate)? It’s no shock why mkts periodically become illiquid when banks hoard claims on Treasuries (~2/3 of which aren’t real). The Fed needs a way to swap those claims...
3/ ...for something “real” when mkts seize & this is it—bank reserves. “Real” in quotes, sarcastically. The fact that this repo facility is on the table does, indeed, mean things aren’t quite right in fin mkts, as Jeff says. They never were. I suspect he’d agree. #rehypothecation

1/ After a couple hundred longform blog posts I think I’ve finally figured out what my writing/work is “about”: personal effectiveness in the digital age. But the underlying principles, mindset, and methods enabled by technology, not tips and tricks and which app to use
2/ I’ve resisted being part of the productivity tips world because honestly, my advice isn’t easy to implement. They’re long-cuts, not shortcuts. I’m not really interested in the easy way to do things, but the hard way that brings unreasonable rewards
3/ But I’ve also resisted being part of the “philosophy of success” market, because it never helped me as much as specific, actionable advice. I insist on being fundamentally rooted in real world effectiveness, or else it just becomes feel-good mush

Finally figured out the contours of my big project assignment for my online Ancient World class this spring. I've moved away from the traditional research assignment in my survey courses in favor of projects that allow for creativity, analysis, and application. +
I'd been stressing about this project because,
a. Previous semesters' assignments have been less than what I'd hoped for, and
b. The course starts January 7! +
The obstacles for students in this course are a lack of familiarity with much of the material beyond 300 or Ancient Aliens (gah) and unfamiliar geography (to many) makes it hard to establish context. But they also come in interested, even excited, about the era +
