During my 2018 campaign for governor, I shared my challenges with debt. In my case, I incurred substantial student loans while pursuing college and graduate education. #gapol
Later, after digging out from heavy credit card debt from school, I built stronger finances through good-paying jobs that allowed me to aid my family with illnesses, rehab and natural disasters.
However, when my parents faced a barrage of crises, including cancer, kinship care and under-employment, I had the privilege of stepping in and providing support. To do so, I deferred tax payments and again incurred credit card debt.
Fortunately, the IRS allowed me to enter a payment plan like millions of Americans who intend to meet their obligations. I regularly made my monthly payments to all my creditors, and I worked to earn additional funds to satisfy not only my taxes and other debts.
While my financial challenges resulted in misleading political attacks, recent success has allowed me to resolve these issues. My hope is that my public discussion of these issues helps more to understand the three-quarters of American families who are saddled with debt.
The deficit between stagnant wages and rising or unexpected costs blocks too many working people from buying a home, opening a small business or sending their kids to college. Debt-shaming stops Americans from entering public service, pursuing their dreams or taking risks.
As I think about my next run for office, I will continue to share my story. I appreciate the kindness and understanding of fellow Georgians and fellow Americans, who should never be in this struggle alone.
