I respect the call for a boycott on Georgia, but I do not believe it is the most effective, strategic choice for change. latimes.com/politics/la-na…
In the pursuit of justice, economic boycotts have long been successful tools. Georgia has witnessed the good effects here and with our neighbors. I strongly support the right of every American to exercise their values through economic protest.
However, I know the perpetrators of #HB481 -- most of them men -- will not be moved by protest. In fact, they want the ability to demonize the film industry while profiting from its presence.
If the film industry stays, these men get to claim victory; and if it leaves, they don’t truly care about those who’d be directly affected: the working families finally able to make plans for the future, the unions building a future here, the artists growing in our midst.
I know the men who did this, and they will not respond to reason, morality or economic harm. They will only be swayed by the permanent loss of power. These bills are cropping up across the country, but only Georgia has the film industry as central to the economy.
We are placed in the unique position to fund their defeat by investing in our success: more progressive voices becoming Georgia voters, more activists and providers funded by entertainment’s explosion, more women rising up to claim their rights.
And so my efforts will be to raise an army of resistance that wins in the courts and at the ballot by calling on the film industry to contribute to our joint efforts. Because I believe we must #LetGAChoose. secure.actblue.com/donate/fair-fi…
