Dems: preserve asylum, diversity visa program, and a path to citizenship for Dreamers.
GOP: border security, a wall, and merit-based immigration.

What do you get when Kushner, Miller & Co. come up with the least common denominator between these two polar opposites?
A big, fat, greasy nothingburger with a side of lies.

That's what happens when you take a system that's a lumbering dinosaur, riddled with bigoted bullets, patched up with executive order band-aids, and try to find a middle ground in it somewhere.

It. Is. The. Wrong. Debate.
One side thinks immigration is fundamentally undesirable, so any compromise means reducing it, legal or not. The other side supposedly sees immigration as a necessary lifeblood of our economy, culture, and identity, so any compromise means preserving and increasing its levels.
So when Dems use the same tired framing of border security and walls, they're only reinforcing the GOP frame of immigration as fundamentally undesirable.

We need to stop it.
Kushner's proposal is just a watered down version of the RAISE Act, and "merit-based" immigration is just privileged immigration. Border security is just militarization, and an immigrant is an aspiring American.
Engaging this GOP on its own terms, fueled by bigotry and fed by white nationalism, is an exercise in futility.

I've said it many times at the doors on the campaign trail: we can sit down at a negotiation table, but we cannot sit down at a rigged table.
When providing relief to people who grew up here, or people fleeing persecution is questioned, the only proper response is a discussion on how to vote that side out. It's not a time to make crappy deals and then proudly label them bipartisan. A crappy deal is a crappy deal.
This is America! We welcome all here, regardless of where they come. We work to build a safe and prosperous place to live. Families are intrinsically meritorious, regardless of whence they come. Labor is intrinsically meritorious, regardless of schooling required to perform it.
We fight against tyranny and bigotry, and check ourselves so as not to wreck ourselves as we have done in the past. We're a microcosm of humanity. We're Americans. High time we started acting like it.

If you agree, we're sitting at the right table. Now we can talk.
