There's a chain of cafes in Singapore (left) called "Paris Baguette Cafe", which I always laughed at because you'll surely never find "Paris Baguette Cafe" in Paris – I assumed it was a local brand

I was startled to find it in Berkeley, CA as well (right) and so I got curious
Their main website says "we are an international premium bakery-café" (cc @vgr lol).

Their *Singapore* website says "our parent company, SPC group"...

and SPC group is Korean, based in Seoul

So a Seoul-based company is selling "Paris Croissant" in Singapore and California

In an idea-riffy mood this afternoon, thinking about narratives.

For whatever reason, humans seem to be wired for narratives. We’re susceptible to them, dependent on them.

This seems true whether or not we’re aware of it, and whether or not we explicitly articulate it
Alan Watts had many great riffs on this, eg “we are all constantly telling each other who we are”. There’s a finite/infinite, living/dead component to this - many play within boundaries, some play *with* boundaries. Hit “inspect element” and mess around
Everything in our lives is either a part or potentially a part of the story we tell ourselves about who we are and what it’s all about. Every object, person, relationship, idea, thought, memory - all are bits in a larger story we get to write and edit

Just realized that another way of framing this - which is going to be annoying because it repurposes very loaded language - is that I’m becoming a more religious person. The nuance is that I’m writing my own religion from first principles

one of the coolest things I can do is refer someone else who's more qualified than me + a better fit than me for something. I manage to simultaneously...

1. make at least two people very happy
2. create some real wealth in the world
3. avoid actually doing any work myself
there is some meta-work:

1. you gotta keep track of who's good at what (which I find naturally interesting to pay attention to)

2. you gotta be Not Be An Asshole + Not Tolerate Assholes, which is generally advisable anyway
"keeping track of who's good at what" is a subset of "keeping track of what's good", which is a subset of "cultivate taste"

1. cultivate taste
2. share it with others freely
3. don't be an asshole

The vertical takeoff & landing-capable F-35B, in particular, could be especially valuable for the Singapore given its ability to operate independently of runways or potentially from the flight deck of larger amphibious ships the country also plans to acquire in the future.
It's hard not to see the South China Sea & China more broadly, behind Singapore’s interest in the F-35. Singapore is heavily reliant on the maritime trade that crisscrosses through that body of water. Other areas, such as the Malacca Strait, could become choke points in a crisis.

Liz was born into a noble family in August 1560 and at the age of 15 she was married off to a Baron by the name of Ferenc Nàsdasdy (he later took her last name because her family was more badass than his lmao). The couple had 5 children together.
