I’m on my way home from the hospital assessment, the proud owner of a new urethra. It's working well and feeling good so far. I’m hoping this is the end of a 14-month saga.
The past two weeks have been pretty rough. At first I was laid out by the impact of the operation. I recovered quite quickly, but the catheter became uncomfortable, then excruciating. A huge relief to have it removed today.
I was sustained by some great books, above all Amor Towles’s A Gentleman in Moscow, which, appropriately, is about a man acclimatising to house arrest. A beautiful novel, reminiscent of both Tolstoy (The Death of Ivan Illich / Resurrection) and Jorge Amado.
I also enjoyed Sam Byers's Perfidious Albion, an all-too-believable dystopia about a post-Brexit Britain in the grip of surveillance capitalism. JG Ballard meets Jonathan Coe.
