The crow/osprey relationship is an interesting one because unlike most raptors, crows have little reason to fear osprey as they are nearly exclusively fish eating. So it stands to reason that crows should learn not to spend time mobbing osprey since they pose no mortal threat. 1/
A 2015 paper suggests that crows do in fact learn this and are less likely to mob osprey relative to red-tails and bald eagles. 2/ wjoonline.org/doi/abs/10.167…
The main exception is in areas where ospreys occur only rarely. Crows in these areas may not have enough opportunity to learn that they are benign. 3/

Something I learned recently that I find myself forgetting and needing to stay on top of is the harm of using language like “wild”, “unexplored”, “untamed” etc. when referring to land that is currently or was formally occupied by indigenous people.
The reason this language causes harm is because it implies that these people either never lived there, and/or that their knowledge of the land is less valuable/legit than knowledge gained by settlers/contemporary “explorers”. In other words they contribute to native erasure.
So while I mess up sometimes (using those words like that is engrained in our culture and a tough habit to break) I try to make an effort to reduce my harm whenever I can. Because language is powerful and why wouldn’t you want to help people feel valued, seen and respected?

Oh boy folks, you ready for this week’s answer? Today’s photo challenge is 🥁🥁🥁 a crow! As the photo was taken in Florida, I can’t tell you which species. IDing the difference between the two species there (American crow and fish crow) is not a skill I have for a pic like this
Generally fish crow (Corvus ossifragus) are smaller than American crows. Though they really have to be side by side for most people, even experts to notice the difference. The biggest help is the voice, with fish crows producing nasally calls.

Bernie's polling is decent, but that he does the 2nd-best against Trump (after Biden) is partly an artifact of name recognition. For instance, Buttigieg polls worse than Bernie vs. Trump. But Buttigieg actually has better favorables than Bernie among voters who know who he is.
It's certainly a messy relationship. Some liberals, including Bernie, have decent (though not great) polling. Some moderates don't. But favorability ratings, which allow voters to say they don't recognize a candidate, are a better way to assess this stuff than head-to-head polls.

The crowd went silent when the choir started singing their wedding song. It is an old love song, chosen by Junmyeon, of course, because Sehun said that if he's the one in-charge of their song, he'd play Bangarang by Skril l ex and let all the guests dance to it.
Junmyeon chose this song because he said, every word speaks of Sehun and it reminds him of classic movie scenes. Oh, the romantic that he is.

You have to adjust for name recognition, though. Biden, at just south of 30 percent, is still something like a 2:1 underdog. And Bernie's position at 20 percent, as I wrote yesterday, is tenable but not great.
Per the chart above, Buttigieg's position is roughly as good as Bernie's on a "polls only" basis, or maybe a bit better. Empirically, you'd slightly prefer to be polling at ~10% with low name recognition than ~20% with high name recognition.

A few highbrow beers (although there's nothing *truly* highbrow on here) creep over into wineland, but that's sort of what you'd expect.

The malleability of US public opinion on trade is something I first noticed years ago (and briefly discussed in this paper from 2011: cato.org/publications/f…). Trade polls have long fluctuated depending on politics, rhetoric & the economy. /3
