Who sold of our railways so that 74% of UK rail services are now operated by foreign state rail companies (with the UK the only country that is barred from bidding to run our own rail services)?

1/ On the Immigration Bill committee the immigration minister @carolinenokes shows that she does not understand differing immigration systems. When asked about #Windrush & EU Settled Status she is saying that declaratory system does not work. This is wrong...
2/ Windrush was not about a choice of people needing to apply for rights (constitutive system) or were entitled automatically by law (declaratory system). It was a problem of not having documentation to prove status. A declaratory system can still issue documents.
3/ @Stuart_McDonald points exactly this out to @carolinenokes. The lack of documentation was the issue not the way people obtained the new status.

Lots of very welcome attention on what Theresa May herself entitled the “hostile environment”. One of main planks is “right to rent”, where landlords have to check immigration papers of tenants. Does this cause discrimination against black and ethnic minority tenants? Thread 1/?
Right to rent was brought in by Immigration Act 2014 and piloted in West Midlands before national roll out. Home Office itself commissioned research in 2015 into whether it might cause discrimination, available here gov.uk/government/pub…
The research was published the same day that national roll out was announced. Not a lot of time for any debate or discussion on this freemovement.org.uk/all-landlords-…

1/3 Tory MP Jacob Rees Mogg says he "completely supports" @DavidLammy's letter on ending the 'crisis' facing the Windrush generation. He tells LBC: “It’s absolutely dreadful. These people are as British as you and I are."
2/3 "It’s really extraordinary the Home Office is coming out with this ghastly bureaucratic guff saying they’ve got to show they’re British. Nobody’s asking us to prove that we’re British when we go and use public services."
3/3 "I think it’s a deep disgrace and it should be the top priority of the government to sort it out. It’s such a bad way of treating people, it puts bureaucratic rules ahead of people’s lives, and I think it’s shameful."
