We're about to begin the event for Runnymede's & @CLASSthinktank report, 'We Are Ghosts - Race, Class and Institutional Prejudice' with speakers @faizashaheen @omaromalleykhan, @johnharris1969 @SamiaBadani and Laurie Mompelat

We're live-tweeting using #RaceAndClass
.@faizashaheen opens the event talking about the stereotype of the working class, as the white and northern, leading to the erasure of long-standing BME working class groups.

It's created division, that we need to overcome and move the narrative forward

Laurie Mompelat (@RunnymedeTrust and @CLASSthinktank) is presenting the report's findings

The research is a year-long case study of working class London, mainly North Kensington (#Grenfell)

There were 10 focus groups, with people from low income backgrounds

Important article from @DebatINQUEST about the #Grenfell inquiry. I have been on both sides of this and it really shows how important it is for inquiries never to lose sight of the people most affected by the disaster they are investigating.…
@DebatINQUEST One thing this article also highlights is how public inquiries, often seen as a panacea, are limited in what they can achieve - they will never provide justice which society craves, as they can’t assign civil/criminal blame.
Public inquiries can only ever be a starting point and are invariably a incredibly long and drawn out one. I can entirely see why those affected most by public disasters can become frustrated and angry at the process

New: we have obtained letters which show PM's chief of staff @GavinBarwell did not act on multiple warnings on fire safety and building regulations in the lead up to #Grenfell - the last letter arriving just 26 days before the fire…
The then housing minister became so bad at replying to MPs calling on him to implement the findings from Lakanal House that they resorted to sending the letters by recorded delivery
David Lammy: "This is yet another smoking gun in a man-made preventable tragedy that took the 72 lives at Grenfell Tower"

A thread on #Grenfell 💚 and the awful racism I am constantly seeing about it. I am exhausted by it. Last night as I sat next to this stone in our theatre, I read tweets that again qualified the deaths of people in the tower with their ethnicity.
2. I had been on the phone to Debbie’s mother earlier in the day and as the 2 year anniversary approaches, her grief is a raw as it was then. And one of the things that upset her - really upset her - was having seen comments about muslims and immigrants.
3. She had been devastated by the news story about the barbecue cardboard effigy. She doesn’t understand why so much hatred seems to be in the ether for Grenfell victims. ‘They have hearts and bones and blood and family, just like my Debbie. Why are people so horrible?”

Thread: Earlier this week, the @EHRC launched its damning report into events pre and post the #Grenfell fire, finding systemic failures in regulation & fire safety to amount to human rights violations, includng of the right to life and to adequate housing…
It's a vitally important and valuable intervention, not least given the unwillingness of the official inquiry to consider human rights and the challenges people have had engaging with it. But I want to come back to a theme I wrote about last year....
I asked 'How could the residents of Grenfell have drawn upon – or had the means to draw upon – existing human rights law and standards in their struggle to make their homes safe and habitable?'

I have cancelled my subscription to @LRB due to incredibly poor judgement in publishing Andrew O'Hagan's lengthy article on #GrenfellTowerFire, and then allowing him space the following week to attack bereaved community member using pseudo-objective word games #Justice4Grenfell
In his reply to the person's complaint that material was used without permission and her words were twisted, O'Hagan reveals new personal details about her and Grenfell survivors.
Throughout the article, he sets up Grenfell activists, local groups and residents' associations to look stupid/demanding, using words which undermine their work before and after fire: "barrage of complaints" "they pursued it obsessively" "dozens of other things they didn't like"

#Grenfell Rest In Power all those that died.
Lets also remember that this was not some unforeseen tragedy, people actually living in the tower repeatedly warned about the risks/dangers/hazards several times and were ignored #Grenfell
Lets also remember the strange retreat of the state in the days after the fire contrasted with the overwhelming support/action of people from right across the country. #Grenfell

Trigger warning: (#Grenfell)

"Wake up, your phone keeps buzzing."

14th of June, 2017. 3:39 AM

I sat up, I was not on call, I looked at my phone. Two missed calls and a text from NHS-NoReply

I dialed the given number and punched in the code, rubbing my eyes.
"What is it?"

"Major incident, fire in West London apparently." I replied. Heading out of bed to the shower as my wife headed to the kitchen, turning on the TV on the way.

The tepid water woke me up, it was a hot, humid night.

"How bad is it?" I shouted.
"Bad. Really bad. Go."

I grabbed the coffee she handed me and jumped in the car. I caught a glimpse of BBC news on the way out.

Growing up in Hong Kong I've seen high rise fires. This was nothing like what I've seen before.

#ABTVtoStopBrexit isn't about affecting the balance of power or forcing a General Election. #ABTV is about sending a message to the Tories, and *especially* to Labour that people don't support *any* #Brexit. Not a #HardBrexit, #SoftBrexit, #NoDealBrexit, #Lexit, or *any* Brexit.
The Tory's control more than half of councils, nearly double Labour. Losing control of even half of them is unrealistic, and even if it happened under fixed term government I can all but guarantee it won't result in a General Election.
A Prime Minister calls a GE under two circumstances:
1) They are miles ahead in the polls and think they can increase their majority (as in 2017)
2) They have suffered a humiliating defeat or scandal.

Here's my *stab*: thank you #Brexit for honing my power point skills. In gratitude, I'm posting my top-20 most popular anti-#Brexit/#StopBrexit memes (in no particular order).
1. One of the more recent ones on @DavidDavisMP hypocrisy over his failure to release the Brexit Impact Reports or sector studies or whatever they are, which he testified existed in "excruciating detail"
Release the #BrexitImpactReports #StopBrexit #revokeA50forthwith #FBPE
2. Never has this one on the #Tory Kakistocracy seemed more relevant with @michaelgove throwing #NazaninZaghariRatcliffe under a bus on #Marr to throw a political lifeline to his dangerously incompetent buddy @BorisJohnson
