Dev Tip 🔥: Figure out how and what you are being measured on by your company.

Instead of just doing your typical todo/task list, incorporate tasks or ideas that will move those metrics forward!

1/10
This also applies to your team.

How is your team success measured?

How can you help move those metrics ahead for the team?

Are there more group-like or communal activities that you can initiate that will help? (E.g Code reviews, training, sharing articles, etc.)

2/10
Some of us are measured by the number of new features we can pump out for the business.

If that's the case, then you want to have as much impact on this as possible in order to grow in the company and gain respect, reputation, have clear results, etc.

Examples:

3/10
- Is it hard to build new features due to technical debt / architecture?
👉Propose to replace or fix what isn't working. Build new features detached from the old way of doing things. Implement a new architecture that's more flexible, bring in better technologies, etc.

4/10
- Are new features taking months or years to get-out-the-door?
👉Look into suggesting a more agile approach to the development of products. "Manage-up", that is, teach and inform your managers how other similar companies can pump out new features so quickly...

5/10
...whether that's due to using a more agile way of building products, or perhaps attempting a minimal viable product approach, issues around deployment (CI, CD), etc.

6/10
Becoming a guide for your team (whether you are by title a lead or not) to meet those metrics will allow you to become super valuable in the eyes of the company.

7/10
Even if you disagree with the "real" business impact of the metrics (yes, this happens 😋) you can still have an impact internally and rise as someone who can intelligently help a company to meet their goals.

8/10
Bonus💥: Keep a list of all of the tasks you did/do and which goal/metric it directly improves. Once you've conquered a good number, and you feel like it's time, you can use it to prove the impact you've had when asking for a promotion.

9/10
Bonus #2💥: You can also use the list you made to craft a resume which highlights all the business impact you've had. By showing how you bring value to a business, vs. a list of your skills/roles only, you will be viewed as a valuable and impactful to candidate!
