It is unfortunate that there aren't more scalable ways for people who have acquired good good judgement though experience, by having and observing bad judgement, to pass on a few lessons by teaching.
What is the most effective way to teach practical life lessons at scale? How can someone who has observed and participated in a lot best help people make new mistakes and achieve more? Mentoring is great but it doesn't scale well.
Writing scales as well as anything and the blog is today's electronic equivalent of what came out of Ben Franklin's printing press. But how many people really read even the very best blogs? Are these readers the people who really need the most help?

When people look at the lifetime value (CLV) formula they may think "Oh this is like math." Yes, there is a formula but if the assumptions are wrong you may have less than nothing. The future of a business can't be calculated like an annuity since humans don't behave predictably.
Bill Gurley and I talked when he was writing this essay about how CLV is a useful organizing tool but you need to be careful about how it is used. All formulas are wrong and some are useful. Applying CLV is a black art --previous experience is helpful. google.com/amp/s/25iq.com…
What is new is that there is far more customer telemetry and new data science tools than ever before and so the scientific method can be applied to managing a customer relationship. But if the assumptions are wrong even with these new tools it may be garbage in and garbage out.

I attended a book talk this morning by Portland/Chang Mai based Andy Ricker (Pok Pok). Of course, I asked him what the restaurant business is like right now. He said "I don't want to talk about it" and then proceeded to talk about it. He said "just don't do it." Margins are tiny.
Ricker repeated the often heard insight that if you make any profit as a restauranteur it is on the sale of liquor. He was talking today about his 3rd book on noodles. He dissed being an author and then talked about the difficulty of selling his Som drinking vinegars at a profit.
Ricker talked about his time with Anthony Bourdain and said it amounted to about 40 minutes. Most time is waiting for a shot or reshoots.

Bourdain said to Ricker he had the best job in the world but was alone almost all the time and was unhappy. "Driven by what he was doing."

Here’s a little lesson in business registration for my US and Jamaican followers:

Most US companies are gusteres in Delaware because it has the most favourable laws for businesses AND “has a separate Court of Chancery to hear cases involving corporate law”

No corp taxes either

Jamaica is nothing like the USA.

I can register in a different state and do business across each state with certain registrations and/or licenses. The USA is a union of individual states.
Most entrepreneurs setup an S Corp or an LLC in their home state, mine is Florida (no personal income taxes so a pass-through entity is preferred and we have Homestead Exemption too).

But that is just at the startup phase to keep over head low.

Did you know that Wikipedia will be 18 on January 15 next year? We would love to talk to any journalists who'd be interested in writing about it, even if as a story it doesn't have a lot of what most journalists look for: 'conflict'.
When speaking to journalists about the anniversary, one told us that it wouldn't be interesting because it lacked conflict, and that to make it interesting, Wikipedia should pick a fight with another tech company. We said that Wikipedia's not really about conflict.
Wikipedia didn't become successful because it encourages conflict between users in an endless battle for Likes or Followers. It's successful because it encourages collaboration.

This is a quote you’ve all probably seen a million times. #Advertising & #techie shitheads love quoting it before they do trends porn. What they never seem to understand is how politically subversive the last bit is. B/c those wankers abuse it I swore I’d never use it.
Still, paraphrasing it is useful for my point. One person’s future is another person’s dystopia and thanks to the fundamental power of the Internet as a tool for distribution we can spread dystopia far and wide. Often before we know it, realise it, or even imagine it.
