"There is a lot of" ou "There are a lot of"?

Isso depende se o que vem depois do "lot" for um substantivo contável ou incontável. Vem que é thread relâmpago!
Lembrando:

Substantivos contáveis são aqueles que podemos quantificar: one car, two cars, etc. Ou seja, ele em a sua forma no singular e no plural. Enquanto que os incontáveis, não podemos! Como por exemplo: water, air, furniture, etc.
Tendo isso em mente fica fácil:

There are a lot of people here (pois "people" é contável: one person, two people, etc)

There is a lot of water here (pois "water" é incontável, não falamos "one water", "two waters", etc)
