On this day 75 years ago, BBC broadcast lines from Paul Verlaine's poem "Chanson d'automne” as code to alert the French resistance that Operation Overlord (aka the battle of Normandy) would commence within two weeks.

1/ On this day 75 years ago, 3 days before #DDay (June 6), millions of Americans heard radio reports citing breaking news from the Associated Press that the invasion had begun.

“FLASH...EISENHOWER’S HEADQUARTERS ANNOUNCES ALLIED LANDINGS IN FRANCE.”

It wasn’t accurate.
2/ A new AP employee in London “had been practicing on a disconnected machine,” the AP would later explain, but that “strip of practice tape” would be transmitted throughout the Americas and read on the radio before it could be retracted.
3/ In a 1994 letter to the NYT, one veteran recalled hearing the inaccurate news read from the PA during a Giants/Pirates game at the Polo Grounds:

“We interrupt this game to bring you a special announcement. The Allies have invaded France."

They hadn’t.

And yet...

POTUS is the first GOP President to acknowledge Pride Month, and for that reason many of his supporters see him as a positive force on these issues.

But this tweet does not reflect his record on these issues in the US, which has been to erode LGBTQ rights (thread) 1/
2/ Supporters such as Ambassador Grenell point to policies the president has made such as pushing to decriminalize homosexuality internationally.

3/ But the president's critics point to his record in the U.S.:

It's nearly inarguable that @HillaryClinton is viewed by the majority of the men & women in the MSM that she should be silenced, increasingly at all costs.

The full answer as to why so many have lent themselves, whether consciously or not, to this cause remains elusive.

1/
We do know many of the reasons why they fight so openly against Clinton and they include an often unacknowledged level of real misogyny that is horrifying for it's obviousness, it's depth, and the lengths to which many go to pretend it does not exist.

2/
I have written many, many threads on the subject of @HillaryClinton. For me, she remains one of the most competent, most talented, and most comprehensively knowledgeable of her or any generation. Those who actually surpass her on any of these scales remain few.

2/TRex was confirmed as Secretary/State (SoS) by the Senate on 2/1/17, just a month after retiring early from being CEO/ExxonMobil, one of the largest corporations in the world with revenue near $400B & 80k employees in 200 countries.
3/Much has been made by the lib MSM/Tillerson negotiating w/Putin & other Russians while heading Exxon, but he also had good relations elsewhere in the world, including in the ME, esp w/Saudi Arabia, Qatar, & UAE. We can assume these made him an attractive candidate to @POTUS

2/ For context, I own my own business and that takes easily 60 hours a week of my time. And since that business is a mental health therapy practice, I can’t just emotionally “check out” and go to work anyhow. I have to be fully “present”, to the best of my ability, when I work.
3/ On top of that, my husband has severe chronic pain issues and I have the majority of all the home tasks, in addition to helping him with his ADLs (activities of daily living) to allow him to keep working because we can’t afford for him to quit.
