L: 1931 Cadillac Fleetwood V8 convertible coupe
R: going by front suspension and windshield frame, 1927 Studebaker or 1926 Huppmobile roadster, but grille shell is a bit off. Cool hot rod tho.

Upon further investigation, car on the right appears to be a 1926 Chrysler G-70 roadster
Cadillac on left has '39 California World's Fair license plate, hot rod on right is 1938; pic was probably early 1939. Guys were already stripping down old cars to make them faster then, but they were called Gow Jobs or Soup Jobs. The word "hot rod" didn't appear till after WW2
Here are a few pre-WW2 gow jobs, the kind of car your grandpa (or great grandpa) used to make trouble with. Gonna build me one some day.
"Gow" as I understand it came from horse racing slang for performance-enhancing drugs given to horses ("gow" was Chinese word for opium)

"Soup" was an old slang term for nitroglycerin; "soup up" meant making the car more explosive

Ford Model T was 20 hp, 4:1 compression; Model A was 40 hp, 4.2:1 compression. They'll basically burn any combustible liquid. Modern pump gas causes problems with unmodified high compression 50's-60s engines
