1.Thanks @Counsell_C #CurriculumEd2019 for hanging on! Inspirational keynote. Contextualised knowledge beats free-floating skills. Challenging concepts eminently teachable when we see curriculum as preparation. Difficulty is relative to familiarity & familiarity can be crafted.
2.Curriculum is deliberately crafted readiness. Introduce children to as much of it as possible as coherently as possible through repeated specific examples. Resonance & connection create surprising familiarity between the new & strange.
3. Difficulty is never absolute - it is relative to the knowledge reference points pupils already have. Teacher is the expert who can teach what’s not accessible elsewhere. Acid test of a Key Stage is what pupils are ready to do next - links to @ClareSealy Chekhov’s armoury.
4. Teachers need to be in conversation about culture themselves. Powerful Knowledge is starting point. PK = conceptual tools for precise thought. Link to Threshold Concepts. Choice of PK/content must be continually reviewed according to disciplinary traditions.
5. Each discipline has rules-formal & tacit- that decide new knowledge. Subjects taught as disciplinary practices. Teachers’ message is ‘what I’m teaching is not all there is’. Curriculum is knowledge structured as narrative over time.
6. Deep engagement with a topic pays dividends. Eg spending time on one religion speeds up learning about another because students gain a deep understanding of what a religion is. Depth study manifests over time. What is knowledge doing here? How will it wash up later?
7. Subject disciplines are structured differently. Hinterland is different in geography & history eg. In History & Literature stories have primacy. In others they are part of the hinterland. Disciplines have different types of question.
Leaders should recognise that the curriculum is bigger than the some of its parts. Can’t study Animal Farm without knowing about the Russian Revolution. Can’t understand C Day Lewis’s Walking Away without knowing about the Trinity. (Influencers/influenced @mssfax)
Strong RE/Arts/Humanities helps tackle disadvantage at KS3. Productive interaction with subject associations is an essential aspect of professional learning and development. Thank you @Counsell_C 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
