half of the talks coming out of monitorama are super cool. the other half ...

if they don't convince you to buy @honeycombio instead of rolling your own, then you are voluntarily opting to learn nothing from the last decade of mistakes in this industry.
@honeycombio i don't usually go balls out on statements as self-serving as that, but in this case it's just a fucking fact.
@honeycombio also: open source companies get away with giving self-serving marketing hoohaw disguised as "talks" that non open source companies would get CREAMED for,

and trusting AI to decide what to page you on still is, and forever will be, bullshit.

i don't know how the theory of systems controllability and its mathematical dual, systems observability, would look when applied to modern production systems.

to me it's like asking how one might calculate the nth order derivative of a hairball you found under your bed.
i do know what characteristics you need in *reality* to understand what's happening on the internals of your systems, by observing them from the outside:

* raw events of arbitrary width
* aggregate at read time
* no indexes r--

i keep forgetting to link to this longer piece. it tells the tale of how we tested a script to *terminate our entire infra and replace it with a newer OS* in prod.

but hey: the biggest reason "Don't Test in Prod" was a cardinal principle for years was because all you had was monitoring tools and aggregates, and you legit couldn't tell at a hi-res granularity what the subtle effects of your tests were.

if you're flying blind, *don't do it.*
observability -- the way i define it, which is NOT how every other vendor out there defines it -- requires the ability to slice and dice down to raw events, and group by any combination of multiple high cardinality dimensions.

so you can see what the loving hell you're doing.

Okay, so on a much more pleasant note, went to a Unitarian service on Sunday because Rabbi was speaking, and it was beautiful and fascinating and felt like the religion of the future. 1/x
And when I say the Unitarian service felt like the religion of the future, I mean if I were doing a scifi show and wanted to positively portray a major human religion 1000 years from now, this is probably what it would look like.
Like, on one hand, it's obviously pretty ideologically nonspecific (and I personally like a bit more specificity), but on the other hand, I expected it to feel blander. Instead, it was thoughtful and beautiful.

A) Ok I have some thoughts on @michelleisawolf's act and the reaction to it from members of the press and other DC insiders. For the record, I was in the room last night. @michelleisawolf's set was great. She was hilarious and confident.
B) First, @michelleisawolf took no prisoners last night. She roasted Trump, Pence, White House staffers, the media, media personalities. Everyone is focused on Sanders but that was only 1 1/2 minutes of Michelle's act. She went after everyone...as it should be.
C) @michelleisawolf was hired to do a roast. That was her job. She wasn't hired to offer media analysis or be fair and balanced. She was hired to poke fun at powerful people. Not once did she punch down. She focused on the people/institutions that are powerful beyond measure
