This week marks a year since I visited the Port Isabel Reunification Center in Los Fresnos, TX to find out what was really happening to immigrant families ripped apart at our border. I saw right away: It wasn’t a unification center—it was a prison.

We need a constitutional amendment to guarantee the right to vote. But we can also take action now. The federal government has the power to regulate federal elections, secure our democracy, and put a stop to racist voter suppression.
I'll start by making sure federal elections get state-of-the-art machines, ballots, and security. We'll replace every voting machine in the country with state-of-the-art equipment and require adoption of a uniform federal ballot. And we'll make sure those systems are secure.

Private prison companies have spent millions to turn our criminal and immigration policies into ones that prioritize making them rich instead of keeping us safe—with terrible consequences. Today I’m announcing my plan to end this private profiteering off of cruelty.
The private prison population has grown rapidly since 2000. And with Donald Trump in the White House, private prison companies saw an opportunity to make millions off of his cruel immigration policies. Today, 73% of detained immigrants are held in private detention facilities.
The companies running prisons and detention centers regularly sacrifice safety to boost their bottom line. Private contractors in both public and private centers regularly cut corners to maximize margins and come up with schemes to make millions off of incarcerated people.

On July 16, 1979, an earthen dam burst at a uranium mill in Church Rock, New Mexico, releasing 94 million gallons of radioactive waste into the Rio Puerco. For most people reading this, this is likely the first time they’ve ever heard of the event. 1/

48 years ago, a judge ordered the Longview school district to desegregate its schools.

But an educational gap remains. And some fear the progress that’s been made could be lost. bit.ly/2BEzw0U
2/ More than 1 million black and Hispanic students study in Texas classrooms that include few to no white students.

And in Longview, students of color still don’t have the same educational opportunities as white students. bit.ly/2BEzw0U
3/ About 56.2 percent of white students graduated ready for college English and math in 2016.

While it’s good that unemployment numbers keep dropping for all ethnicities, these mask a growing problem: the widening wealth gap between white and black families. By 2020 black and Latino households are projected to lose even more wealth: 18% for the former, 12% for the latter.
2. For every $100 in white family wealth, black families hold just $5.04. Politicians like to use unemployment numbers to tout their job creation credentials but unemployment numbers can be gamed by creating low-paying jobs, which widen the wealth gap and exacerbate the problem.
3. Staggering: Between 1983-2013, the wealth of the median black household declined 75% (from $6,800 to $1,700), and the median Latino household declined 50% (from $4,000 to $2,000). At the same time, wealth for the median white household increased 14% from $102,000 to $116,800.

It’s clear the Democrats have embraced the optics of the moral high ground, and that’s great and all, but the fact still remains that even though the Republicans are blatantly morally bankrupt, they STILL CONTROL 3/3s of the fucking federal government.
None of these GOP motherfuckers even gives a fuck about the moral high ground, so how exactly does Dems habitually being the bigger people stop the Republican Party from being the antichrist right now?
