Very high probability the tanker attack was Iranian. Either IRGC or one of their proxies... probably the latter. Their goal isn't to incite war, it's to create the appearance that the U.S., which is the protector of the sea lines, aren't doing their job. +
Iran is effectively peeing on their territory, showing the region/world what they "own" and can do (shut down the strait). U.S. response should be to hinder Iranian proxy forces... kinetic and other. For example, there are signs Iran proxies in Iraq can be turned on each other. +
The timing of this is significant. We're days away from the Mideast Peace Conference. Iraq and Lebanon have declared they will not attend. Both countries have heavy Iranian control and influence... if not outright state proxies at this point. +
As seen before the JCPOA, Iran is HEAVILY susceptible to sanctions. Iran wants those gone... obviously. This is more leverage towards that end. Our response should be to double down on the sanctions, and work to split up, divide and diminish Iran's proxy forces in the region.
