Are you looking for good YA with solid feminist themes and a realistic assortment of well-realized characters? Well, I have a book for you.
REBEL GIRLS, by @badcoverversion, is set in 1992, at a Catholic high school where a vicious rumor is circulating that a member of the pro-life club had a secret abortion over the summer--an expelling offense according to school rules.
What follows is a story of trying to live up to Riot Grrrl ideals, even when defending someone whose opinions don't match your own, mixed with the pains of friendship, high school politics, and staying true to yourself.
Despite what the plotline may imply, this is not a preachy anti-abortion book; our viewpoint character is staunchly pro-choice. It's also not a preachy "you must think like we do" book; the main theme is very much "your life, your decisions."
Beautifully written, thoughtful, and meticulously fair. This is a lovely book, and I wish I'd had it when I was in high school.
Honestly, my only issue is that I was halfway through the text before I was able to nail down the time period as 1992. I'm sure someone with a better knowledge of 1990s punk and grunge would get there faster than I did.
