I’m not at all surprised, just vaguely sad. I hope they can find one. Numbers are dwindling, especially at municipal pay.
I *think* they post these salaries per month? So $56,000 - $77,400 for a new CS bachelors grad, an associates + 2 years in mainframe, or 6 years in mainframe? That’s pretty good for Springfield IL, but I can see why they’re having trouble filling it. It’s only going to get worse.
You can make a really good living in mainframes if you play it strategically and have a plan B.

Interviewed a guy for a code level malware reversing job who clearly didn’t know what mal reversing was at all and had just done some A/V admin.

This would be OK, but he kept us on the phone for over another hour insisting he was totally qualified and would just figure it out.
“Sir, thanks, but we’re not sure this job is the right fit because you don’t know assembly...”

“No, no, don’t worry. I’ll just learn it”

It was like buying a used Explorer.
A couple people messaged me, “but he’s so motivated”
If unclear, the guy applied for a totally different job than he intended. He didn’t know the function of the job in question or state any interest. But I can’t fault him for conviction. Whatever the job was, he was going for it

So, I’m personally of a mind that it’s fine to form a personal friendship / relationship with someone you met in a professional context, if it’s done in a mutually respectful and responsible way! 🍸🥃

There are definitely many ways to push it way too far, though.
Every so often we run into someone who takes flirting / advances / not taking “no” for an answer way too far at a con or security meetup. Often, alcohol is involved. Sometimes they’re in the clear position of power and just shouldn’t be doing it at all. It makes an impression.

Look, I know a lot of people who are really shaken up by the Bright news / case right now. It's always really rough when it's somebody you've interacted with or know personally.

Here's what I can tell you. I'm a professional digital forensic analyst (GCFA, GCFE, etc etc). (1/8)
In a professional and volunteer setting, I've had some cases with distressing findings. I've had to seize computers from people and look them in the eye and smile after seeing the ... inhuman(e) things they've done or aided in. Eye bleach. Laptop bleach. Gin.
I would qualify myself as not a complete idiot. I read a lot, and I know quite a bit about crime, human psychology, and sociology as a byproduct of my profession. I'm pretty good at reading humans. I have a decent intuition for skeevy guys and dangerous situations.

Perhaps the first real pointer to the realities of life.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the great work conducted by SGF members can also be corroborated using the reported deliveries from @TroyTeslike great workbook and inside EVs monthly sales numbers.
2.)
In Troy's sheet he provides the number of reported deliveries per month dating back to April 2018. If we divided the deliveries reported to the tracker by Inside EVs monthly sales numbers we arrive at a monthly sample rate.
3.)
If we plot the sample rate vs the month (April =1, May=2, ect.) on a Log-Log plot a trend emerges. We can model this trend using a best fit line to predict a sample rate for January 2019 and see how our model would have performed predicting past monthly sample rates.

my five TDD premises stuff has been well-received over the months since i put it out, but one of them seems still very underplayed, even by many died-in-the-wool TDD'ers: the correlation premise.
the correlation premise says that the internal quality of our code correlates directly with our productivity. when the internal quality goes up, productivity goes up. when it goes down, productivity goes down.
all of the premises were formulated in part to undercut dangerous misunderstandings about what TDD is and why we do it, of course, and the correlation premise is that, too.

(1) Here we go again. Despite being a new bridge, this Miami walkway collapsed, tragically causing multiple fatalities.

I speak from industry experience when I say: Someone failed to do their job properly.

Ever since I was a kid, I've always built my main rig myself.

The time when that was practical or necessary passed a long while ago, but it was an eccentricity I couldn't ever let go.
Some of it was borne out of the DIY punk rock impulse, some of it out of a sense of craftsmanship, some of it out of overindulgence of a control complex, I always preferred writing code on something that I built myself.
My main rig right now has lasted since 2009 and its retirement is nigh. While Sandy Bridge proved to be a durable platform, the models are finally getting too big to train in a timely fashion.

And this was the first time I paused before starting to look at components.
