At a hearing in April, I asked @jpmorgan CEO Jamie Dimon how a single parent working full-time at his bank in #CA45 could make ends meet. He said he'd "have to think about it."

Over two months later, I still haven't received any follow up from him.
So I sent Mr. Dimon a letter today to continue to conversation we started in April. As I write in the letter, "it is patently unfair to force employees to bear layoffs and stagnant wages in hard times and not lift them up in good times."

September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, which reminds us of the ongoing need to improve how we treat mental health. With suicide on the rise in nearly every state, we must match increasing awareness with concrete action to address our mental health crisis.
In June, I introduced the bipartisan Mental Health Parity Compliance Act to better enforce existing laws requiring mental health care be covered equally by insurance companies. It would also direct agencies to address patient complaints and report to Congress on noncompliance.

Many of you asked for more detail about my trip to the border this week, so I wanted to take time to share my thoughts. (long but important thread)
I visited 3 facilities: the non-profit San Diego Rapid Response Network Migrant Shelter, the Otay Mesa ICE Detention Center, and the Chula Vista Border Patrol (CBP) Station. They interact with immigrants at different stages and were very different from each other. (2/ )
What is happening in CA is different than in TX or AZ. These differences reflect geography, history, culture, resources, and other factors. My first observation to share: the “southern border” is not a monolithic static thing and our leaders need to see that. (3/ )

When it comes to making policy, we've got to have a facts first approach.

There's been a lot of talk about border security and immigration, but I wanted to see for myself what is going on. So today I toured a migrant shelter, an ICE detention center, and a border patrol station.

Brown v. Board was decided 65 years ago but our fight for equality is not over. The work to ensure we have equity and full opportunity in our classrooms, our schools, and our education system must continue.
The work continues when we see an unconscionable achievement gap in our classrooms that is already in full force on the very first day of kindergarten -- where black children are already 10 months behind in math and 12 months behind in reading compared to their white classmates.
The work continues when in that same kindergarten classroom, children of color are five times more likely to be disciplined, suspended, or expelled as a white child -- impacting their opportunity and potential. A school to prison pipeline in full effect at five years old.

I was asked today how I manage to write novels while working full time, and since work is a little quiet today (oh the irony), I thought I'd share the answer with you guys: small, achievable goals.

So here's a secret about me: my daily word goal is 200 words. No, that's not a typo. I meant to say 200. A tiny, why-even-bother number.
Except, 200 words a day has translated to 3 full novels over the last 6 years, plus two half novels (1 abandoned, and 1 wip), as well as countless rounds of edits, revisions, pitches, concept chapters, synopses, bios etc. etc.

1) In light of the US Mexico Canada Agreement (USMCA) I thought it might be relevant to re-up a portion of an older thread.

One that discusses trade deficits and under-employment.

Examples are inherently simplistic but many seemed to find this useful.
2) President Trump is attacking long-standing trade inequities as a means to revitalize our domestic manufacturing capacity.

A re-balancing of our entire trade policy.
3) The Balance of Trade – or Trade Balance – is simply the value of exports minus the value of imports.

A Trade Surplus means the Value of Exports exceeds the Value of Imports.

A Trade Deficit means the Value of Imports exceeds the Value of Exports.

1- Taking a deep dive into the Communauté métisse du Domaine-du-Roy et de la Seigneurie de Mingan (CM) this am, the first self-declared “métis” org to file a court case post-Powley. That case reached the QC Court of Appeal in May 2017. Waiting for decision any day.
2- CM’s origins in January 2005 were in anti-Innu and white rights activism. They’ve left a LOT of traces, including in the 31 interviews (2007) with its founders that it submitted in the court case.
3- What’s clear through member oral histories conducted by a sympathetic anthropologist for the purpose of “proving” their claim is that these folks came to work together as white rights activists first and foremost.
