It’s part of the reason the college admissions scam even had legs. There are many with the belief (for good reason) that if you don’t have the actual goods, likes and shares can be a stand-in, as well as a pressure point for those who resist your bullsh*t.

Would also like to point out that this would be a very effective way to mold people into achieving *your* goals. Boost their feeds with fake followers, fake clicks, fake shares. Fake it till they (fake) make it. Give them a good long swig of success. Then ask for favors.
You wouldn’t even have to be obvious about it. Load them up with fake engagement, then take some away. Watch them squirm as revenue drops. Then, offer a lifeline. First, maybe a shout out that gets them back their engagement high.
Then, offer to pay them to create some content—with your editorial input, of course. Rinse; repeat.
