Why are we doing this?
Our demographic survey says that we should.

4.5 % feel that SDSD does not foster an inclusive environment. Another 13% are neutral on the topic.
This means we can and need to do better. #coins #sdss2019

Open Feedback from the Demographic Survey:
(1) encourage more active mentoring within the collab
(2) bullying of early career scientists not enough is being done to stop or prevent this esp by senior scientists.

How do we make progress:

[1] communication & active listening

(1.1) check-ins informally
(1.2) active listening
(1.3) clear communication of expectations

[2] Cultural sensitivity

(1.1) spreading the knowledge - encourage and facilitate discussions within your team about cultural discussions

(1.2) personal pronouns - make a standard part of introductions

Step in when you see conflicts of these types. When you make a mistake, apologize. When others make a mistake, remind gently.

[3] Discrimination and Harassment

(1.1) listen and document at the time and in place, be aware of mandatory reporters

(1.2) know your local resources, cases are most often handled locally

(1.3) practice bystander intervention

Bystander intervention is a key way to diffuse and deter discrimination and harassment.

[4] encourage involvement

(4.1) mentoring: reach out to Early career researchers, help make connections

(4.2) telecom call outs: encourage team members to speak up by asking for opinions directly

(4.3) conferenece call outs: save time for "stupid" (not stupid) questions
