I was in a board meeting last evening that made me think about when I heard Peter Fenton say that the most effective way to learn to be a board member is to watch great ones in real board meetings. I listened to this podcast on the way home that talks about board member skills.
Peter Fenton's podcast that I was referring to is: thetwentyminutevc.com/peterfenton/ Peter's point about the importance of being prepared and doing the reading in advance so the actual meeting can be a discussion is totally on the mark. Gurley's podcast is a must listen on many points.
My blog post on being the best board member you can be is: google.com/amp/s/25iq.com… The process of learning to become an effective board member is an apprenticeship. Being the chair of a board committee (eg, compensation or audit) is something I plan to write about eventually.
