On this Sunday morning of Mothers Day, a few Bible verses on maternal imagery for God:

Tomorrow's lectionary text is John 21:1-19, a post-resurrection appearance of Jesus.

In the story, the disciples have fished all night and caught nothing. Jesus shows up and they catch a great haul of fish. And then Jesus invites them to breakfast on the beach.
It is a "coda" story in the Gospels. John's original ending was at the end of chapter 20. This story was added later.

In a way, it reminds me of the ending of Harry Potter. You get the end and then you get "19 Years Later," a second ending.
If John was written just before 100, it means this ending came a decade or two later than that. Maybe even later.

So why two endings? What's the deal here?

Prof @julieingersoll has been researching & writing about the connections between these small, hyper-conservative Presbyterian (NOT the mainline Presbyterians) groups and radical right-wing theocratic politics & potential for violence.
The most extreme forms of a theology known as "Christian Reconstruction" that argues biblical law must replace the Constitution grew from the work of Rousas John Rushdoony, who was, for a time, an OPC minister.
Rushdoony left the OPC in 1970, but his work spread through small, conservative Presbyterians denominations through the influence of seminary professors, publications, and (most especially) networks of home-schooling.

This morning I got a first hand account from Marian Wright Edelman on the very first freedom school that civil rights activists organized in Greenwood, MS as part of Freedom Summer 1964. It began outdoors with elders sitting in a circle of rocking chairs reading with children. 1/
Today, 55 years later, I'm at a national training where over 1000 college students are being prepared to implement Freedom Schools across the country this summer. 2/
I've done some volunteer work with Freedom Schools locally & am familiar with the energetic songs and dances of the opening Harambee circle but have never seen it done at this scale. 3/

1. I grew up in the era of three commercial TV networks plus taxpayer-funded PBS. Virtually no one under the age of about 45 knows what that was like then. For one thing, news moved a LOT slower in those days!
2. This quote explains much about that era:

“The control of the television industry by only three companies had produced, among other things, a unified mass culture, the products of which were experienced by nearly everyone.”

We heard a little about childhood cancer (possibly good but waiting for details) and school choice (not good) in last night’s #SOTU.

However, despite 1/4 of the population, children were largely ignored.

On 29 April 2015 at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs, @HillaryClinton delivered the first policy paper of her campaign for the Democratic nomination. It was called "Race and Criminal Justice" and it was not only impressive, it was brilliant. 1/
By that time I knew Hillary Clinton. I mean I had come to understand how she thought about policy & how she viewed this second run.

She was sending a clear signal that day that most ignored or were simply unwilling acknowledge.

This was why she was running for President. 2/
In that speech she said things that no other major politician had had the guts to say. As many pointed she said things that President Obama wasn't able to say.

It was a courageous way to start her campaign. For a woman accused of always playing it safe this was her hell no. 3/
