On this Sunday morning of Mothers Day, a few Bible verses on maternal imagery for God:
“For a long time I [God] have kept silent, I have been quiet and held myself back. But now, like a woman in childbirth, I cry out, I gasp and pant.” (Isa. 42:14)
“As a mother comforts her child, so will I [God] comfort you; and you will be comforted over Jerusalem.” (Isa. 66:13)
“Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I [God] will not forget you!” (Isa. 49:15)
“Yet it was I (God) taught Ephraim to walk, I who took them up in my arms; but they did not know that I healed them. I led them w/cords of human kindness, w/bands of love. I was to them like those who lift infants to their cheeks. I bent down to them and fed them.” Hosea 11:3-4
“Like the eagle that stirs up its nest, and hovers over its young, God spreads wings to catch you, and carries you on pinions.” Deuteronomy 32:11-12
“You were unmindful of the Rock that bore you; you forgot the God who gave you birth.” Deuteronomy 32:18
“As a mother comforts her child, so I (God) comfort you; you shall be comforted in Jerusalem.” Isaiah 66:13
“For a long time I (God) have held my peace, I have kept myself still and restrained myself; now I will cry out like a woman in labor, I will gasp and pant.” Isaiah 42:14
“But I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother; my soul is like the weaned child that is with me.” Psalm 131:2
