I think there's a big difference between plot as a whole & individual story moments. For me, plot is scaffolding; it gives the bits & bobs context, a place to exist & breathe
Ideally, they work together in an organic way, growing from characters and their motivations. Wanna write a cool duel? A cute coffee shop encounter? A chilled out moment on the couch? Build your plot & characters to accommodate that.
I'm a sucker for beautiful structure, but I write toward the moments that make my heart sing.

Also, like... be indulgent. Or else why are we even writing this shit?

Still thinking about @dongwon's excellent thread on the lie of authenticity, & I wanted to talk a little about the pressure to perform authenticity in your work as a writer. Spoiler alert: it's all bullshit.
When people come to your work looking for "authenticity," they're looking for something that will fulfill the expectations they're dragging in behind them.

What are those expectations? Who knows! They're actually not your problem!
People see my name or face, & they expect an authentic "Asianness" in my writing based on their idea of what "Asianness" means. Authorial nuance & individual taste get painted over (& this is why so many Asian American folks are salty about The Joy Luck Club)

It's easy to say, "Write for yourself," & much harder to do it.
But I think it's so important. When you lose sight of what you want, your writing suffers.
I've always written my stories for myself & had a strong sense of what I liked. But the two times where I really struggled were after my first SFF short story was published, & while I was doing my MFA.
My first publication was a story that I'd spent over a year trying to figure out. It only worked when I found the angle that excited me & turned the constraints of the story to my advantage.

I also had no fucking idea how to replicate that process.

I've been thinking a lot about writing process & how individual it is. It's easy to get anxious about measuring up or feel like you're not doing it right.

But your process is your process. It's figuring out what works for you, not what works for your friends or other authors.
It takes me a long time to write a story. I used to think there was something wrong with me & my process bc I couldn't write fast. (It always looks so easy on the outside.)
But I've realized that it's not because I don't draft quickly--it's because I'm always, constantly writing & iterating on what works & doesn't work. I don't let go of things until I feel entirely confident that they're ready.

The stray small branches and green bushes cut and scratched against Seokjin's skin, the peeking tree roots on the forest floor almost insulting to make him trip, but all of those were ignored by the hunter.

The rush of adrenaline flowing through his veins screamed at him to run.
To hunt. To eliminate the enemies. The monsters.

Seokjin could still hear the voices of his co-hunters from the distance, though they were faint. No matter, he had to reached his target. It shouldn't have ran farther by now as his arrow pierced through its limb and slow it down.

Those on this side of the channel who think there's some fundamental difference between Tory Brexiters like Mogg & Labour ones like Corbyn are kidding themselves, they're all chasing exactly the same unicorns as far as the EU27 are concerned
2) Please have a read. It's a hard thread but it demonstrates why anyone, *anyone*, Tory or Labour, who tells you they can get a "better deal" on #Brexit is lying to themselves or you, and has a bad case of English exceptionalism

3) we, as a country, would never give France or Germany or any other country a better deal than the one we have ourselves, whether the nastiest right wingers or the cuddliest left wingers asked for it.

It's simply delusional to think 27 would do for us

Big difference between criticizing Israel's policies and arguing against Israel's *right to exist*.
Most of Goldberg's argument is that Israel is turning illiberal and right-wing, and it's not anti-Semitic to criticize the Netanyahu government policies. Which isn't anti-Semitism.

What she glosses over is the argument against the Jewish state itself.
Is Rep.-elect Tlaib's comment: "Israel has hypnotized the world, may Allah awaken the people and help them see the evils of Israel" anti-Semitic?

This is a good thread. I have similar feelings when I see some of the stuff about billionaire romance that goes around, declaring it dead or shallow or inappropriate for our current political climate.
I totally get not wanting to read rich, white, alphole billionaire heroes. But I have a real issue with the idea that poor and working-class women aren't supposed to fantasize about having a lot of money because *ideological purity*.
We see a lot of people in various privileged positions declaring a trope dead while not thinking past their own experiences on the subject. A black author or reader wants a book about black billionaires in a genre dominated by whiteness? There has to be room.

1. He planned for mos to make a solo announcement, contrary to established procedures, hid his plans from his superiors, informed Lynch shortly before his press conference specifically to make it impossible for her to cancel the announcement.
2. Prosecutors followed the law in determining that Hillary did nothing wrong re classified materials.

We think of software correctness as a code problem, but it's just as much as a systems problem. We can't fix the code without also changing the underlying system.

Before I explain what this means, I want to talk about Edwards Deming.
Deming is one of the founders of 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴. Among other things, he popularized the idea that systems, in the absence of disruptive forces, eventually reach a state of 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹, where measurables follow a normal distribution.
Let's say you have a factory producing widgets, and ten widgets are defective each day. If the system is in statistical control, there's a range of "normal behavior", say 5-17 defective a day. The problem, Deming saw, is nobody thinks in these terms.
