Lawyers for Rep. Duncan Hunter say his affairs with three lobbyists and two congressional staffers "often served an overtly political purpose" and suggests he was simply a "married man mixing business with pleasure."
Hunter's lawyers say "nearly every expense" prosecutors identified for which he charged the campaign to carry on affairs "was incurred in connection with a legitimate political activity."
The Justice Department doesn't think much of Rep. Hunter's argument that, because two officials attended a Hillary Clinton fundraiser in 2016 the case against him must be the result of political animus.
DOJ: "Hunter moves to dismiss the indictment based on the faulty logic that if prosecutors attend a fundraiser for a candidate on one side of the political spectrum, they then are barred from prosecuting a defendant on the other side."
DOJ thinks the argument that prosecutors must be recused from prosecuting people who belong to a different political party is especially dumb.
Here's that filing. Hunter is supremely unlikely to prevail on this. usatoday.com/documents/6176…
The Justice Department thinks Hunter's demand that his trial be moved to a place where Trump won a higher percentage of the vote also is pretty dumb. It is "less an attempt to eliminate politics from seeping into jury deliberations and more a conscientious effort to enable it."
"The jury pool in the Eastern District of California also has access to the internet."

(This is not the kind of thing federal prosecutors write when they are taking your argument especially seriously.)
DOJ says it's confused why Rep. Hunter thinks he can't get a fair trial in the place where he was re-elected *after* being indicted.

Hunter’s lawyers and DOJ filed a bunch of other stuff too, but it’s Saturday and you can go read it all from @big_cases ->
