Magnitude 6.4 earthquake was actually centered in Kern County near the town of Ridgecrest, California. It might've felt scary to those in L.A. County, but it was really only intensity 2 or 3 shaking--"weak." Not strong enough to set off ShakeAlertLA latimes.com/local/lanow/la…
Yes, L.A. County residents note that ShakeAlertLA didn't issue an earthquake early warning for L.A. County. But actually, it didn't fail. ShakeAlertLA is programmed to only issue a warning if stronger, or "light" intensity 4 or greater shaking, hits L.A. County.
ShakeAlertLA is only the city of LA's warning smart phone app. It uses information on the similarly named, but different system, @USGS' @USGS_ShakeAlert system. There are currently no apps designed to give the public early warning of incoming quakes statewide yet....
... but for scientists in the loop on the @USGS_ShakeAlert system, scientists in Pasadena/Southern California *did* receive a shaking alert before the shaking did arrive.
I write more about it here. latimes.com/local/lanow/la…
Not all magnitude 6.4 earthquakes are the same, so to speak -- because the magnitude 6.4 quake happened in a remote part of the Mojave Desert, only "weak" or "light" shaking (intensity level 2-4 shaking on the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale), was felt in much of L.A. County
Here's a guide to what "intensity" means
Correcting an earlier tweet: Epicenter is actually in San Bernardino County. To be clear, epicenter, Searles Valley and Trona are in San Bernardino County; Ridgecrest is in Kern County. Thanks to an eagle eyed reader for letting me know.
