1. Mad magazine was primarily read by kids between 9 and 14 years old. It was also the most important satirical magazine in American history. Let me explain.
2. Here's a story making fun of Joseph McCarthy from Mad #17 (done circa summer of 1954). It's a mash-up of McCarthy hearing with a TV game show, making fun not just of demagogue but also the new media that enabled him.
3. The Mad sensibility, created by original editor Harvey Kurtzman, was abrasive, in-your-face rude. It was ethnic at a time (1950s) when America was increasingly white-bread (Kurtzman loved to pepper Yiddishism in his dialogue).

1. Since people were asking about this subtweet, let me un pack it a little. There used to be a magazine called Living Marxism which morphed in 1990s into Spiked and now Spiked-Online. They take money from Koch Bros & specialize in Climate Change denial & other rightwing causes
2. Spiked-Online just published this article celebrating the Anti-Woke Left (a.k.a. dirtbag left). I think that's telling because there are signs that dirtbag left will follow trajectory of Spiked (left to right): spiked-online.com/2019/07/04/mee…
3. I'll add that the problem with the dirtbag left is not that it's offensive but that it's lazy. I mean, the sort of shock humor it specializes in is a pretty low grade of comedy, one that's common to c-list stand-up.

1. This whole "speaking Spanish" thing is mystifying to me. I mean knowing more than one language is a good thing! Spanish is a world language, the language of America's largest neighbor and many other states in the hemisphere!
2. Tens of millions of Americans speak Spanish. Why not address them? In Canada, it's the norm for prime ministers to be bilingual. Trudeau greatly benefitted politically from being fluent in English and French.
3. Also, in Canada even national politicians who aren't fully at least make a fucking effort. I mean Harper's French was painful, as was Chretien's English (and, tbh, his French). Still, they tried and that counted.
