1. This whole "speaking Spanish" thing is mystifying to me. I mean knowing more than one language is a good thing! Spanish is a world language, the language of America's largest neighbor and many other states in the hemisphere!
2. Tens of millions of Americans speak Spanish. Why not address them? In Canada, it's the norm for prime ministers to be bilingual. Trudeau greatly benefitted politically from being fluent in English and French.
3. Also, in Canada even national politicians who aren't fully at least make a fucking effort. I mean Harper's French was painful, as was Chretien's English (and, tbh, his French). Still, they tried and that counted.
4. Also Rubio and Jeb spoke Spanish during the Republican debates in 2016.Did Stephens object to that then or did he see it as a sign that they were making an outreach to an important group of voters?
Re: making "millions of Americans feel like strangers in their own land." Trump ran as a goddam birther & got the GOP nomination and, thanks to the electoral college, the presidency.
