I know this may be an abstraction for some of y’all. But my dad was born in Jim Crow Mississippi. Sen. James Eastland believe black people were inferior and worked tirelessly to deny my family their human and civil rights. It’s unthinkable to praise him while courting black votes
There was no “civility.” A decade before Biden was working with Eastland, a white supremacist and segregationist, to stop Court-ordered desegregation, black people were being murdered all across Mississippi trying to get the right to vote.
In 1964, a full decade after Brown v Board of Education, Mississippi was the only state in the Union where not a single black child attended a school with a white child.
This gauzy view of people who worked to deny the very citizenship of black Americans, who represented the blackest state in the country while denying the humanity of those they were to represent, is not a mere misstep. And it’s not a misconception.
