It’s amazing that folks are characterizing a politician who collaborated with and recently praised those who upheld a violently enforced system of racial apartheid as simply “working with people you don’t agree with.” The “disagreement” was black people’s basic humanity & rights.
*The collaboration was to curtail school desegregation.
**You can work with someone on things like infrastructure or whatever, but that does not later require you to praise them and look back fondly on how he called you son and represented a civil era.
***This is that more civil era.
****This is a symptom of how we’ve come to view the Civil Rights Movement as about some kids getting ketchup poured on their heads and a few marches and not an era a racial terror, murder and barbarism.
