#Mulan teaser is out! Love that they’ve gone back to a plotline more closely mirroring the original for this; the leaked early script was disturbing to say the least. I’ll miss the music, but on the flipside they‘re amping up the wuxia style action—and the casting looks on point.
I know folks are poking at the accented-English-signaling-China thing—but if so it’s subtle; even Mulan (Liu Yifei) barely reps an accent & she spent much of her life in China. She’s trying to DOWNPLAY her accent in fact (interview from 2008 for contrast)
There’s a decent chance that Mulan’s actors are talking like they ordinarily talk, with no “direction” to play up their accent (or invent one). If so, what are you gonna do? Some Chinese actors have accents. Even Tzi Ma, who’s been in Hollywood for years:
