Have employees? Me too! Here's a few small things studio heads can do to make your studio more equitable and comfortable to work for... other than more pay and benefits :) (Feel free to chime in with similar!)
when hiring, notify people who didn't get the job.. at the latest, after you've signed the candidate you picked. It feels a little awkward but it doesn't take much time, and saves humans weeks or months of agonizing.
pay candidates a basic hourly wage to take your hiring tests. They are professionals and their time is worth something, or you wouldn't consider hiring them. It also equalizes the playing field for candidates who can't afford to work for free.
if you're a team of 3-10, have 1-on-1 mtgs with each employee every few weeks. It'll feel weird at first, but job satisfaction correlates highly w/ manager rapport, + little things can pile up without an explicit release valve. Just ask how it's going. Chat about life & work.
this shoulda been #1 but oh well. Be as transparent as possible with salary bands, raises, bonuses, etc. Awkward in North America but even if you intend to be fair, systemic underpayment is best prevented by crowdsource. If you can't explain a gap, maybe it shouldn't be there.
schedule team bonding hangouts and activities *during* work hours. Everyone has different life situations and shouldnt be penalized if they can't attend -- besides, you're not entitled to their time outside work hours anyway.
always go through the full hiring process, even if you're pretty sure you already have the perfect candidate. Our rolodex tends to reflect our unconscious bias and a network that looks like us -- taking shortcuts reinforces hiring the same kinds of people over and over.
