One thing which I find equally bewildering and skin-crawlingly creepy is the sheer number of people who believe that it being legal to have sex with someone means that it is appropriate to have sex with that person.
Legality is arbitrary as hell. Nothing makes someone more appropriate to date/fuck on their 18th birthday vs being 17 years and 364 days old.
I just feel like that’s a huge part of the general conversation missing right now. (Not from the Jeffery Epstein situation specifically or anything; that was not 18 year olds anyway). Like you’re still gross if you’re 48 and hitting on a 22 year old. You’re gross.
Whenever someone says “age is just a number” I’m like let me have $7,000. Your bank account is just a number.

Frankly it's a bit frustrating that some men have kind of willfully misunderstood what is and is not creepy and have, instead of learning to read social cues, decided to say that they simply cannot tell what women think is creepy!!!!

There is literally no way around the fact that we have to change our personal buying habits in order to survive climate change as a species. People get so caught up in the idea that individuals *shouldn't* have to make changes because it isn't our "fault," that the world warmed.
But it is. It is our fault that we still import SO MUCH from overseas. It is our fault that we demand high quality produce and meat to be constantly and cheaply available.
middle and upper class people HAVE to change their habits. We have to stop taking cruises and flying in planes. We have to stop ordering 18 shirts from Amazon and trying them on at home and then returning a bunch. We have to stop demanding that our stores have 487 cereals.

One thing that I find difficult to articulate and maybe it's worth an essay is that the 'magic realism' that English speaking audiences associate with Latin American authors doesn't exist anymore. Please follow me as I explain.
There was a time, about 50-40 years ago, during the Latin American Boom, when this was a living, active mode of storytelling. It wasn't just Marquez writing in that mode either. Juan Rulfo, Miguel Angel Asturias, and many others wrote in that mode. Not because it was twee--
but often because it was the only way to tell certain stories. You have to remember a few decades ago Latin American was chock full of dictatorships and very iffy political situations. Easier to write a story about flying lizards and use it as an allegory.

Government data is almost by its very nature incomplete. At the very least, it is collected and processed in ways that can make it incompatible with other systems. Think about what happens when someone changes their name. 2/x
It’s not just a simple process. You have to have the initiating act (court decree, marriage). Then you have to change everything. Your driver’s license, social security record, passport, USCIS, birth certificate, insurance…all in separate stages that cost time and money 3/X

What’s hard for me is the sheer number of people who believe that this is no big deal and that life for families like mine will just go on as usual. Because surely insurance companies didn’t REALLY deny based on pre-ex conditions before the ACA, right?
I don’t know how to convince people of what is true. I don’t know how to make people care, how to convince them that there’s enough to go around in this ridiculously wealthy country.
So I’m sitting here again, crying into a pile of laundry, gutted that it wasn’t enough. That laying bare our family’s private medical story, sharing the bright light of our son with them, that it somehow wasn’t enough.

People aren’t racist because they lack education or intelligence. They’re racist because being racist makes them feel good. The solution is not education but to make racism so socially unacceptable and harshly punished that being racist makes your life fucking miserable.
That’s why it’s important to come down hard on these MAGA kids. People are always trying to give whites racists the opportunity to change and nonwhite victims the obligation of forgiving. Fuck that. Let the racists make their own opportunities for growth and redemption.
People are already disagreeing with this but when in college did you take your Don’t Be Racist class? Meeting people of other races (in college or otherwise) certainty helps, but how exactly does becoming educated make you stop being racist? Elite schools are *extremely* racist!

One thing KOT have been SUPERSTARS about calling out this week is "gaslighting" which is when people try to distract you from the real issues of the fight. For everyone who is unclear about what this is, let me do a quick primer using the Kimiko/NYT situation to illustrate.
Kimiko told us that her in her office she doesn't choose photos so we are wrong to be mad at her - even though she is an incoming bureau chief and the same NYT has this description of a bureau chief's job for one of their other bureau chiefs - "leads all news coverage".
Another random journalist might have been excused, but a bureau chief's literal job is leading. If anything, I would question her leadership on that alone. How will Kimiko "lead all coverage" like her DC counterpart when someone else far away has exclusive, total image control?

I've had remarkable control or at least perspective on every single emotion I've experienced these last six years. I realize now it wasn't courage or astonishing emotional maturity. It was self-protecting resignation. It felt necessary in the face of neglect, disbelief, abuse.
It’s helped me achieve more than I ever imagined under some extraordinarily difficult circumstances. But survival strategies developed under duress usually, eventually outlive their usefulness.
I've started to experience what medicine can look like at its best. I’ve met doctors who think like scientists, but operate like detectives; who are that rare mix of creative, curious, skeptical, rigorous. It's allowed me to open myself up to hope and but with it, utter terror.
