I turned my frustration about coverage of "busing" when we really mean desegregation into a history. Some truths: Busing was wildly successful in the South. The myths you've heard aren't true. Northern racism = to Southern. It wasn't the bus, it was us. nytimes.com/2019/07/12/opi…
Subbing out the word busing for desegregation, then and now, is powerful propaganda tool that gives the veneer of racial innocence to explicitly racially motivated actions or inactions.
The white veneration of the neighborhood school vanished if lots of black kids lived nearby.
When government deployed the arsenal used to separate and demean and deprive black children in order to ensure their inequality, suddenly they became a problem.
To say busing failed is to WILLFULLY ignore the entire South, where HALF of all black Americans live.
Arguing to simply make separate black schools equal denies 1) Brown v Board struck down Plessy 2) Ignores that we never have done for a single day. 3) Allows white people to pretend they believe in educational equality without ever having to actually ensure it.
That the only conversation these last few weeks has been about the "failures" of busing and not the failures of the last 30 years of resegregation and neo-Plessyism tells us we still are not ready to deal with the educational experiences of black children. And they know it.
Also, I am doing a live Twitter chat today at 4:30 p.m. I'll answer your questions, etc. So tune in and feel free to post questions comments here.
