some things to remember:
(1) Groups like @RAICESTEXAS or the @ACLU or "Free our Neighbors" are working to spread information & to free/aid people. freeourneighbors.org
(2) ICE often helped by local government, & local contracts & elections matter! appealpolitics.org/ice-and-states/.

The @acluhawaii was a major advocate in pushing these bills forward, & I imagine they're sure to push for them again.

I actually wrote on Hawaii in March, when Dems buried the legislation to abolish disenfranchisement after it passed one committee. appealpolitics.org/2019/hawaii-pr…
When we think about the spaces that Democrats and/or progressives have to push for reform, we usually think of the (few) states that have Democratic trifectas. This is a reminder that even low-hanging fruits like those 2 bills Ige vetoed can be tough, tough sells in those spaces.

! PA adopted legislation (signed by Dem governor) to transfer some of the Philly DA's powers to the AG for 2 years, in an apparent effort to counter Larry Krasner's reform politics. theintercept.com/2019/07/08/da-…

Bill enables Philly police to work directly with AG, cut out Krasner.
The Intercept reports that some Dems who voted for the law are saying that they were "duped into voting" for this provision (which singles out Philadelphia and only Philadelphia); it was added to a later version of bill.
Say what you want about what you think DAs should or shouldn't do. Bottom line: DA have long exercised massive discretion in ways that grew mass incarceration. Now a few DAs are using discretion differently, & only now are state lawmakers weakening them — see TX, MA, PA, FL.

I've spent a lot of time the past few days thinking abt social media + how it influences teens. My students read this article yesterday and had a great discussion about ideas that are introduced as a joke and then become discussion-worthy on social media nytimes.com/2019/03/18/tec…
One of the sticking points in their discussion was that Youtubers like Pewdiepie, who has been called out for racist and anti-semitic words, is just entertainment. They compared him and others to South Park and similar controversial TV shows from the 90s-00s.
There were a variety of opinions about whether all teens (and kids even younger) can differentiate between good and bad satire. But what most agreed on was that the level of access is so different today.

So #Facebook & #Instagram (second time in 3 weeks) deleted my accounts. For sharing information about #Kashmir. No explanations or replies to my questions are given. Of course this is not about Facebook, nor about me, but the much more dangerous path SM is taking.
It is all about Justice & about what is happening to many people living under oppression & facing severe surveillance & suppression on the ground and even online.
It is about principals & rights. Human rights. Enshrined in statues & bragged about. Said to be universal. Said to be
I don't know ONE Kashmiri who hasn't been subjected to some form of censorship. On the ground there are far worse consequences than removed posts. Journalists (and MANY civilians) have been trashed, arrested & targeted when covering human rights violations by India.
