Today SF announced a new "safe parking lot" to help people living out of cars.

It'll cost $40k-$50k a month to run, and $500k to set up. 30 cars can use it.

That amortizes to ~$2k per month per car.

Serious question: Why not just give cash for rent?

Some guesses:

- harder to apportion who should get cash and how much
- subsidizing rent pushes prices even *further* up

But I'm curious what the decision calculus really is for these issues

Extremely true.

It’s rewarding to tell “vulnerable” stories where everything works out for the best, and the moral is that you can overcome.

But telling stories mid-flight, when you have no clue how or whether it’s going to work out, entails actual risk.
To me the key is the ending.

People can get extremely heavy publicly so long as the moral of the story is they overcame the issue and are now stronger than ever before. (Usually this requires some obvious proof.)

But even minor situations, if unresolved, feel shameful to share
It would be nice if people could be more honest about their personal failings and struggles, because maybe then it would be easier to see them more clearly.

But as Erik said, there isn’t really a space for that in modernity. We have no priest or confessional booth.

The better the idea, the more urgency you feel to do it NOW.

Important to listen to that!
Also: with good ideas, everything feels more obvious.

Fuzzy thinking is often swept under the rug with phrases like "we'll iterate."

With good ideas, you think more like "and then we'll do X, which will enable us to do Y, which leads to Z."

In short: @rabois is right.
@rabois (You still end up iterating and learning along the way, of course, but the broad strokes of the model should feel pretty obvious from the outset.)

Today is the 25th anniversary of one of the best days in my life. This is not just because it’s the 25th anniversary of possibly the greatest day in SA history, but because I personally had one of the best days of my life. 1/n

This is the best explanation I can find for why Trump made moves to swiftly to end the Mueller probe - he was convinced he would be ultimately cleared by Mueller and that the probe was a “hoax” as he has dubbed it but he didn’t want 2.5 years of his term overshadowed by a probe.
2. In making moves to end the probe that he claimed would not find him guilty of collusion, Trump flirted with obstruction because perhaps he felt public/his base would forgive him for obstruction if he was cleared of collusion. He was wisely advised to let the probe play out.
3. But it’s not over…yet. The Trump campaign overtly relished/ benefited from Wikileaks actions; Clinton campaign covertly benefited from dissemination of Steele’s leaks to media in 2016 re Trump-Russia collusion narrative (Page, Manafort) which Mueller report debunked.

And that aptly summed up Rash Behari Bose, he was the brains behind the scene, setting up INA from scratch.
In many ways Rash Behari was the opposite of his more famed namesake, Subash Chandra Bose. Netaji was a brilliant orator, one who could motivate people to shed blood for the cause of freedom, the charismatic leader, who could sway the masses like none another.
