How to Survive the #AI Revolution of the Workplace: or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Automation

👇
As automation & #AI 📈 in the workplace, what skills will become more in-demand? According to @McKinsey_MGI:

🖥️ Technological Skills
💞 Social & Emotional Skills
🧠 Higher Cognitive Skills

What exactly are social & emotional, & higher cognitive skills & how do we “get” them?
The development of cognitive skills and social & emotional skills (non-cognitive) begins when we’re kids.

But these skills ~should~ continue to be developed into adulthood.

Are there frameworks we can use to practice developing these skills? 🤔
According to @brightmorningtm, we can practice the following to dev social & emotional skills as adults:

1. Practice recognizing emotions
2. Notice physical responses
3. Get curious
4. Observe your emotions
5. Notice the impact of your emotions on others

(examples 👇)

Cognitive skills are split into 2 categories (see Bloom’s Taxonomy):

Low order: skills which are dev’d well in school (reading, recall, basic understanding). Foundational.

High order: synthesis, analysis, & ultimately, innovation!
Harder to teach/learn & must be practiced.
How can we develop higher order cognitive skills?

🏃‍♂️Exercise
📑Watch TV & read “actively”
🎨New hobbies
🎮Games/puzzles
✈️Travel, visit a museum
👩‍🎓Become a student
🛠️Attend workshops
☮️Reduce stress
☹️Address depression

According to @sujamthe, “…people will need to be trained to work alongside machines” and “…there are few organizations providing that training.”

Expect to see a big shift here. Some recent/early examples:

- Increased discussion of empathy (S+E skill) in design
- "Should programmers study ethics?" (S+E & HC skills)
- Communication workshops, corporate retreats/team building (S+E skills)
Co.'s love automation & AI bc of its potential to 📈 profits.

We should appreciate it too. At it's best it offers:

- Improved efficiency in the use of our time, therefore
- Freeing us to be more effective on our tasks, ultimately
- Improving the our quality of life
tl;dr Develop yourself by taking care of your emo health, challenging yourself & learning daily.

As a side effect, you'll be better at your job which will increase your value as a team member and better prepare you to ride the shift that automation will bring to workplaces.
