The right stews in resentment and victimhood at not being embraced by the popular culture, which rejects their goals of slashing social programs, cutting taxes on the rich, shutting off minorities' voting rights, unleashing polluters and seizing women's bodily autonomy.
They watch from the outside as the culture becomes what in their minds is more dangerously libertine, less (their version of) Christian and more multicultural, while their pre-1960s popular culture centrality has disappeared.
This sense that the left, which has little political power, has all the cultural power; that the left won the culture war and wields social power over the right from Hollywood to music to every aspect of "cultural cool" eats at them.
Trump shares that deep desire to be culturally central along with politically powerful. But Trump and the right can take the latter but can't get back the former. The last "culturally cool" right winger was Alex P. Keaton.
And locking human beings in cages will just never be culturally cool in a non-autocracy (which hopefully we will continue to be). Even in an autocratic state that kind of brutality is only cool to willing authoritarian followers and fake-favored by those too scared to say no.
(Wrote a ton about this in my book, BTW!)
