#BREAKING: The 11th Circuit just ruled that the #BayviewCross, which has stood in a @CityofPensacola park for almost 80 years, is allowed to STAY! This is a major victory for #ReligiousFreedom and an important new precedent: 1/…
@cityofpensacola The cross was erected by Pensacola citizens in 1941, just months before the US entered WWII. It has long been a gathering place for community events and it is a valued part of the city’s history and culture:… 2/
@cityofpensacola In 2016, an atheist group sued to remove the cross, saying it was offensive. (One plaintiff used the cross for his “Satanic rituals.” Another was recently sentenced to 15 days in prison for throwing a drink on a U.S. Congressman:…) 3/

"Whether Supreme Court can refer questions of law to a larger bench in a review petition?" - this issue will be considered by the bench Today

#BREAKING: A federal court has thrown out criminal convictions of four volunteers who left food and water in the desert for migrants at risk of death. The court said prosecuting them violated #RFRA--a major victory for #ReligiousFreedom! 1/…
Fueled by faith, these volunteers traveled to the Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge, where migrant deaths are common, placing food & water along foot trails to prevent future deaths. 32 sets of human remains were recovered from this area in 2017 alone. 2/ credit: Google
Proving no good deed goes unpunished, the government criminally prosecuted the volunteers for entering the refuge & “abandoning property” (i.e., food & water) without a permit (even though no permit would allow them to leave food or water for migrants anyways). #Kafkaesque 3/

The president proposed banning Muslims from entering the country and then his administration worked to make a legal version of such an order. That’s not a commitment to protecting #religiousfreedom.
2/ Some folks need to reacquaint themselves w facts:

As a candidate Trump called for “a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country's representatives can figure out what the hell is going on."…
3/ A ban was issued in Jan 2017. Giuliani explained: “when (Trump) first announced it, he said, 'Muslim ban.' He called me up. He said, 'Put a commission together. Show me the right way to do it legally.' "

This is a bizarre case of progressives siding with the #Trump Administration and throwing Muslims and their civil rights under the bus--even when the supposed “benefit” for LGBT folks is nonexistent.

This is open hostility to #ReligiousFreedom: 1/…
It's also wrong about who RFRA protects. Our empirical study of religious freedom cases shows that the groups getting the most benefit are non-Christian minorities, not Christians. Bleating "Hobby Lobby" doesn’t change that: 2/…
Most obviously, on the specific RFRA issue #SCOTUS is reviewing ($ damages against federal officials), there have been 8 lower-court cases:
- 7 for Muslims
- 1 for a Hebrew-Israelite
- All but 1 were prisoners
- ZERO were Christians.

1-France, here we go again: The chancellor of the Académie of Versailles went to visit a school where workshops on how to fight bullying were organized. Two Muslim women wearing a headscarf were there, helping teachers to organize and manage those workshops.
2- It was reported that the chancellor was shocked by the presence of those Muslim women, and immediately left the premises of the school. She claimed that they should not wear a headscarf inside the school because it violates laïcité.
3- The chancellor also felt that this "fight bullying day" was ruined because of the presence of those mothers. Where do I begin?

#BREAKING: Huge victory for #ReligiousFreedom:

A 2016 HHS regulation, governing nearly every doctor nationwide, said doctors must perform gender-transition procedures, even on children, & even when the procedures could be harmful and were against the doctors’ conscience and medical judgment. 2/

Firstly (since this needs saying) you can absolutely discriminate against people while acting according to some religious beliefs. This Trojan horse enshrines a positive right to discriminate against many groups including LGBTI people, divorcees, single or unmarried parents etc
Religious bodies and schools can already discriminate based on a person’s religious belief or activity, sex, sexual orientation, lawful sexual activity, marital status, parental status or gender identity. This law seems to extend this right to any person of faith
Secondly, the wording is so broad here that you could arguably commit any discrimination and get away with it. So long as you are acting “in good faith” with your religious beliefs, you are incapable of discriminating against people. How would this work with existing laws?

A thread: the Morrison govt's religious discrimination bill overrides existing anti-discrimination law & enshrines the right to discriminate against LGBTI people. It may also support vaccine denialism and overturn abortion clinic Safe Access Zones 🚨 #ReligiousFreedom #auspol
Really, the govt could have just been honest and called the religious discrimination bill “Folau’s Law”. It says that employers may not impose rues limiting employees from making “statements of belief”… say, like a social media post demeaning gay people to millions of followers
The caveat is that employers are allowed to limit “statements of belief” if they can prove that it is to avoid financial hardship… not sure how they would effectively demonstrate that. There are dedicated sections to sport + clubs in case the motivation wasn’t clear enough
