I’m good at rocks. Animals are outside my lane. But I’ve gotten way more careful about “cute” viral wildlife pix after the first time I read about how much cruelty they can mask.

I want the world to be less bad because I’m in it. Making things good would be awesome, but I at least want it less bad.

Trying to not ❤️, share, or click on footage of upset animals can be tricky, but it makes the world that tiny bit less bad.

If you’ve got the capacity to hit up DC in September, this type of science lobbying is important & effective.

Travel $ available for underrepresented people, students, community college geos.
I did a similar NSF science lobbying day the summer before grad school. I was naïve but enthusiastic, which paired nicely with more cynical folks.

Demonstrating a wide range of What Does A Scientist Look Like is part of the lobbying along with Why Data-Driven Decisions Are Wise.

Creators need to get paid & need to get credit. That it was student work makes it even more essential.

You’ll never make everyone happy.

So, stop trying.

Spend your energy to make yourself
happy instead.

Others will be happy because you are, not because you made them happy.

I used to confuse my own happiness with other people’s until I realized this
simple truth.
When I was trying to make others happy:

- I aimed to be the best meeting of their day
- I would meet where they wanted to
- I would discuss what they wanted to
- I would only think about how I could help them
- My self worth was tied to their positive feelings about me
When I was focused on other people’s happiness, I thought I was being selfless.

Instead, I was being selfish.

I was living my life focused on making others see only one part of me. The part I thought would make them happiest.

The helpful, positive and encouraging part.

Ooh! I know this one! See before the target audience for that tweet was born, those big evil meanies from The Left told everyone it's OK for white women to marry black and brown men, and we shouldn't murder those men. So now nothing can stop that and since white+Other=Other OH NO
Over a long enough period, ALL the white women will marry OUTSIDERS (because they're all so hot!) and there won't be any left to have white men's white babies and there won't be anyone left who thinks they should be in charge of everything because they look like they're sick and
get really bad sunburns! See, the fact that they can't really spend any time outside without a ton of sunblock proves they're meant to be in charge, behind a desk somewhere, out of harm's way!

That was fun, let's see which unreasonable far right beliefs the rest are code for!

Lately I've been thinking a lot about the concept of fandom.
Honestly, I was afraid to tweet too much about dogsledding on this trip. I was afraid it was too niche for most of my followers, but more so, I think I was afraid of being perceived as a superfan, a nerd, a sad, overenthusiastic fangirl on the sidelines.
Most of this stems from feeling a need to be taken seriously, both as a woman and as a person in the publishing industry. I am a Serious Writer. I'm the editor of a Serious Publication. Serious Writers and Editors tweet about Serious Things. They do not fangirl; they do not fawn.

The point of the presentation is working towards Work/Life balance. But really, half of it is about burnout. And a little about crunch. And some about self care. But what it isn't is a list of things "Do this and you'll be fine." Because it doesn't work like that. Each person's-
situation and answers to the problems are going to be different. What works for some people doesn't work for others. The idea is that by explaining how I figured it out, maybe you can find your way too.
First - WLB isn't about Time Management. The ability to manage your time *helps* but it's not the answer. You can keep everything neatly planned and still get crispy. The bigger and far more important part is Energy Management.
