(1/12) One more tweetstorm for the day, and then I’m done. First, I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who’s followed me over the past three days. I don’t value my worth by social media popularity, but to go from 300 followers to over 1,800 is pretty humbling.
(2/12) I do what I do on here b/c I’ve always been politically opinionated & feel I have an interesting perspective to share. Also, I’m working through an illness & transitioning from one part of my career to another, so I’m sort of hanging out here while I have some downtime.
(3/12) I have no inflated sense of self, or any illusions that my voice is anything special. I just want to encourage people to keep fighting, keep questioning, push yourself out of your comfort zone, examine your own beliefs regularly to make sure they stand up to scrutiny.
(4/12) I’m also here to do what I little I can to stand up for women and lesbians. And I want to do that in particular because I know how hard this world can be for young women.
(5/12) When you feel like you have to work twice as hard as a man to get half the credit, when you feel objectified, when you feel threatened and unsafe, when your looks are “too distracting,” when you’re not pretty enough, when you hear “come on, smile, honey.” Been there.
(6/12) Or when, as a lesbian, you’re told you’re too pretty to be gay, or are you sure you’re gay?, or you just haven’t been with the right man yet, or why do you hate men?, or I bet I could turn you straight. Or, of course, you’re a hellbound sinner.
(7/12) It took me well over 30 years to come to terms with who I was. It took a failed marriage to a man and the ensuing fallout to make me confront what neither I nor anyone else in my orbit was willing to admit. That I was gay.
(8/12) Now I’m in my 50s and pretty much invisible, but the fight for women’s rights never ends. And I want to do what little I can to help. I help in various ways in real life (without revealing too much about what I do), and I try to be a supportive voice on here as well.
(9/12) People can call me a TERF or a bigot all they want. I know my own heart. I’ve long worked with women and the LGBT community (yes, even the “T” part) to bring about positive change and give them support. Not trying to virtue-signal; just pushing back at the haters.
(10/12) My faith and my family have been the two things that have got me through the hardest times. My mom and dad love me even when we disagree and even when I massively fuck up. My two sons are a constant source of support and strength.
(11/12) And now I have a wife who in so many ways is the exact opposite of me, but who I know loves me like no other. She came into my life when I’d given up on finding love, and I came into hers when she’d hit rock bottom. We were just what each other needed at the right time.
(12/12) So hold tight on to those you love, never give up your faith, never stop questioning, and never stop fighting for what’s right.
