It’s an endogenous thyroid hormone metabolite discovered in 2004. As of 2014, we don’t even know its synthesis pathway. But it’s a NANOMOLAR LEVEL agonist of TAAR1, which is the primary amphetamine receptor target

And everything else it hits is Extremely Interesting. It’s practically a cocktail of every most-interesting metabolic and monoamine target

It’s been known for decades that thyroid hormone had a neurological effect and it’s been known for a fair while it involves TAAR1, but this is tying it together in very interesting ways

Did you know T1AM, this mysterious trace thyroid metabolite, has a specific plasma protein carrier that scoops it up as if it was as important as a hormone?

It suppressed appetite (in mice) at 1.3ug/kg while simultaneously raising plasma glucose, the precise opposite of other thyroamines

it reverted drug-induced amnesia and spurred learning.... but also appears to REQUIRE histamine and MAO-B (!) for its effect

this may be the first time (that I know of?) that MAO-B has been shown to be critical/indispensable in mammals

anyways the thyroid / monoamine neurotransmitter linkage gets more and more curious the more it gets studied. maybe there’s something big here. frontiersin.org/articles/10.33…

Also apparently there’s only one major lab working on this (to my knowledge) and they’re mostly busy with other things so if you’re looking for a fun neuropsych project..... 😏
