Having been lectured at my comic book store yesterday about how doing a book with female leads is political because it's ON PURPOSE, I would like to cordially request that all of you please pick up a copy of FEARLESS from your local comic shop.
Seriously. Comics with male leads aren't political because they happen organically, apparently, as if there were no editorial decision-makers behind WOLVERINE VS. DEADPOOL or BATMAN & SUPERMAN UNITE or any of the many other all-male team-up books.
It's part of the job of a writer to make you accept and believe the situations we put characters into, but we still write them. I promise, the boy Ghostbusters didn't walk into the studio one day and just start filming. They were as fictional and created as the girl Ghostbusters.
And this "it has to be organic" argument is always leveled against non-white, non-straight, non-male characters. It's a standard the white guys don't have to meet. They're organic just by showing up.
You know what I find non-organic? Team after team of six white guys, one person of color, one woman. But somehow three women kicking ass together is "political." Reality is apparently "political."
