Today I received a call that someone dropped their medication and needed help picking them up. Yes. An actual call. I rolled my eyes and thought “you CANT be serious?” I arrive, pissed off as ever, and ready to see who the fuck had the audacity to call. What i saw humbled me.
It was a quadriplegic who was confined to a bed. He had lost both of his legs and his arms were basically dead weight too. The look of embarrassment on his face said it all. The medication was legitimately a few inches from his grasp. He starts by sighing and saying “believe me,
I don’t want you here any more than you want to be here” Whatever sour mood I had went extinct instantly. I grabbed his medicine and asked where he wanted them. He told me. I asked if there was anything else I could do for him. He instinctively said “no, I’m all set” but then it
Looked like he was having an internal struggle. I waited. He then inhaled and said “actually, ya. Can you please pick up the stick that’s on the ground beside me? It’s what I use to control my computer.” So i did. He thanked me. He said that he has a home nurse that comes every
Day to check on him and his ego wanted to wait over 6 hours for her to come rather than to ask for help but he ended up swallowing his pride and asking for help. I told him he did the right thing, to which he smiled and said “I think so too.” After making sure he was good, I
Left and sat in my cruiser, disappointed in myself for having the audacity to have the idea of helping someone, no matter how small, be a nuisance to me. Im better than that. It was a humbling reminder that we do this job to help others.
It’s not always going to be something sexy. Its not always pursuits and fights. Sometimes, something as small as kindness to another makes all the difference in the world.

Be better than me.
