It is F--k Cancer Friday. One thing I've learned about cancer is that it is also a huge psychological battle. People going through it may want to talk about how pissed off they are that they are subjected to constant pain and that their lives have been turned upside down.
If you're a friend or family member or caregiver, sometimes the best thing you can do is sit and listen. Show empathy. Hold a hand while they talk. Let them be angry. Punch pillows together. Let them curse for 3 minutes straight. Just be there for them.
This disease is so incredibly messed up as-is and the chemo is torture. People with cancer are being rocked physically and mentally and caregiving is not just about picking up Rxs or taking someone to treatment. Or cleaning or cooking. Or making calls or wiping up bodily fluids
It is also about being present with a person. Really listening. Just shutting the hell up for 10 minutes and letting someone express themselves. Cancer is a prison and as a caregiver, it is one you yourself cannot free them from. But their speech is theirs. So let them talk.
To all the folks who have been touched by cancer, we are in a big club where everyones experiences and outcomes are different, but I see your struggle. I see it every time I go to the cancer center. I see it everytime people message me about their cancer.
So, on this Friday and probably every Friday on, even after mom beats this SOB, we say f--k cancer! It may steal your health and peace of mind, it may be the biggest party crasher known to man, but damn it, it is your party after all and you'll cry if you want to.
