I had a childhood nickname and wasn't known by my first or middle name for several years. When I left it behind, I chose my middle name to go by. When I married, I kept my last name but could have changed it. I also ask to be called Ms. instead of Mrs.
I'm fortunate, because society by & large respects these naming choices today (though it didn't always). But pronouns are even more important. So seriously⁠—it's just not that hard to call people what they want to be called. Even if you feel confused, you're not being attacked.
