I had a childhood nickname and wasn't known by my first or middle name for several years. When I left it behind, I chose my middle name to go by. When I married, I kept my last name but could have changed it. I also ask to be called Ms. instead of Mrs.
I'm fortunate, because society by & large respects these naming choices today (though it didn't always). But pronouns are even more important. So seriously—it's just not that hard to call people what they want to be called. Even if you feel confused, you're not being attacked.
