Maybe some reporters can take a break from stalking midwestern diners to instead interview some of the GOP's “million-dollar donors,” who will be attending the "exclusive, mid-August retreat in Jackson Hole, Wyoming." /3

ICYMI, my piece on how the popular ethic of the New Deal became the punchline of a joke first told in the 1970s that later became associated with Ronald Reagan's presidency. /1
In 1976, Senator Edmund Muskie took a genre--the "three lies" or "big lie" joke--that had highlighted interpersonal weaknesses ("the check is in the mail," "Of course, I'll still respect you in the morning.") and turned it into a spoof of government itself. /2
In Muskie's hands, in addition to mocking or reinforcing personal foibles, a new element was added: He suggested that the government was as unreliable in its duties to citizens as the person who told white lies to avoid ethical scrutiny. /3

I'm grateful to @ed_kilgore for his engagement with and critique of my @madebyhistory piece on the ways in which the anti-Goldwater GOPers in 1964 presaged in critical ways the "Never Trumpers." In this thread, I'd like to offer a brief response. /1
@ed_kilgore @madebyhistory First, I'll concede that the analogy between 1964 and 2016 is imperfect and in a longer piece I would have delved into the differences. I agree also that Goldwater's candidacy was, as Ed says, DOA. /2
@ed_kilgore @madebyhistory However, we should remember that the vast majority of pundits and politicians, including those that supported him, thought that Donald Trump would lose in 2016. His victory was a surprise to many people, including apparently Trump himself./3

2) Illicit Mullah Omar comes from an urban-suburban seat centered on Minneapolis (MN-5). Although racially it is 67% White & just 17% Black
2) contd . . . (as of 2012), the urban Whites are ultra-leftists. This was the district of the Jihadi Abuser, Keith Ellison. Trump only got 19% here in 2016, the GOP nominees got 22% in ‘16 and ‘18. The last Republican to win here was in 1960.
3) Ayanna Pressley’s district (MA-7) is a mostly urban seat in Boston (excluding downtown) & surrounding areas. It was plurality White (34%) as of 2012 (26% Black, 22% Hispanic). Until Pressley defeated the Dem incumbent, the ultra-leftist Capuano, it only elected White males.

I have a new report out about economic distress in the U.S., co-authored with @rp_griffin. This is based on 2018 polling from @DemocracyFund's Voter Study Group. voterstudygroup.org/publications/2…

Here are a few findings. (1/x)
The big problem with measuring views of the economy is partisan bias (news.gallup.com/poll/233576/am…). "Is the economy getting better" correlates with party identification at |r|=.44.

This report uses a 14-question index that is weakly correlated with party identification. (|r|=.11).
Finding #1: Economic distress is higher among people of color than whites. This should be obvious but the focus on the "white working class" obscures it.

In fact, whites without a college degree report *less* distress than blacks *with* a college degree.

To save our democracy, Democrats need to win big. They not only have to beat Donald Trump in 2020, but also have to achieve majorities in the House and Senate that are big and stable enough to survive the 2022 midterms.
Doing that will require winning back states and districts that they lost in 2014 and 2016, taking others that have long been in GOP hands, and governing in a way that keeps those states and districts from turning red again.
